Charles was born on October 26, 1937 in Chautauqua KS at the home of his grandparents Bill and Lillie Pennell. His parents Charles Henry Friend and Ruby Jewell Pennell Friend were longtime residents of the Chautauqua area. His family was later joined by a brother William Neil Friend and wife Mayola and a sister Sharon Kay and husband Dennis Logan.
Charles dad was in construction in various places so he had the opportunity to travel around. Charles remembered riding a troop train from the state of Washington traveling toward Chautauqua. He felt really important sitting on a soldier’s duffel bag and remembers the windows all covered with black. After the war the family lived in Wichita, KS, moved to Colorado, and back again. After graduating from Derby High School in Derby, KS in 1955 Charles began work in construction with Soderberg Const, moving later to Lakin, KS in 1958 to work with his dad and uncle, Al (Babe) Seery in house construction. It was in Lakin that Charles met and married Beverly Yager in 1959. The couple had a daughter Kimberly Dale and then a son Charles Raymond. Though divorce ended the marriage in 1966 it didn’t destroy the relationships that had developed.
While in Lakin, Charles began working with Kansas-Nebraska Gas Co. but later returned to house construction as a setup crew for Capp Homes. This work took him into many of the central USA states. After moving to Colorado about 1978 he became a building inspector for Capp Homes. This expanded the territory for which he was responsible to much of the Midwest and West of the U.S. A bankruptcy of Capp Homes made it necessary to move on to another task. In Colorado Springs Charles worked for Anderson Windows and was once again traveling around the country. Wanting to slow down a little he later worked for a spa business in the “Springs” area. In 1995 the call of family brought charles to Urich, MO where he worked as a custodian at Sherwood Schools, the same place that his brother Neil worked. After suffering a severe heart attack and the ensuing surgery in 2000 he retired. Charles enjoyed fishing and hunting both with a bow and gun. He was remodeling a fishing boat earlier but this summer’s heat slowed his progress.
Both of Charles’ parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother Neil and wife Mayola of Urich , a sister Sharon and husband Dennis Logan of Advance, NC, Daughter Kimberly Dayle Mercer of Miami, OK, and son Charles R Friend and wife Catherine of Marysville,WA. Charles was a grandfather to Zachary, Ty, Ryan, and Rachel, a great grandfather to Lillie, Kadynce, Jordan, and Kendall, an uncle to Teresa, Doris, Cary and Christina, a great uncle to Sariah, Jacob, Will, Joe, Mathew, Jason, and Michael, and a friend to coworkers, church members and neighbors.
