Darlene Louise Garrett

May 8, 1947 — January 10, 2012

Darlene (Cookie) Louise Garrett of Columbia, Missouri was born May 8, 1947 in Chicago Illinois the daughter of Reverend William (Bill) Harold and June Louise (Foster) Crowhurst. She departed this earth to be with our Lord Jesus on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the age of 64 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Darlene retired in 2006 from the Special Education Department at McIntire Elementary Fulton, Missouri after 15 years where she served as the Elementary Handicap Department head. She was a graduate of Southwestern Baptist College with a degree in Elementary education and the University of Arizona with a Masters degree in Early Childhood Handicap education. She was an educator for 32 years and spent seven years volunteering with the Southern Baptist Home Mission board in Tucson Arizona until 1991 when she moved to Columbia Missouri.
Cookie was active in her church, Grandview Baptist in Centralia, where she served as Prayer tree Chairman and was on the history committee. Additionally she pioneered the creation of “Sunshine baskets” which she assembled for anyone in need of encouragement while they experienced life’s trials.
Darlene loved children and enjoyed tending her flowers and bird watching. She will be remembered by here generous and giving heart as well as a faithful prayer warrior who would ask specifically “How can I pray for you”. Her grandchildren will remember her for her “Grandma goodie bags” whenever they were going on a trip as well as getting to unwrap Macaroni & cheese for Christmas.
She is preceded in death by her parents Rev William (Bill) Harold and June Louise (Foster) Crowhurst, as well as her daughter Cindy Lou of Columbia Missouri.
She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years John W. (J.W.) of Columbia Missouri; her son, MSgt Bill Garrett and wife Heidi, Lakeland, Georgia; five grandchildren, Stepheni, Kaden, Skyler, MaKialee and Noah as well as a brother in law and two sisters Robert and Belinda Gentry, Belton Missouri and Geraldine Sisk, Harrisonville as well as numerous relatives and many friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri.
Graveside services will be in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Missouri, Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Grandview Baptist Church Memorial Fund, Centralia, Missouri.
