David Lee Cowan, 69, of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at home with his wife and family at bedside. He was born on August 17, 1955, at Harrisonville, MO Hospital, the son of Charles and June (Volyes) Cowan.
David was united in marriage to Cheryl Ann (Ayler) Cowan on June 14, 1980, in Harrisonville, MO. Their marriage was full of love, family and laugher for over 44 and a half years. They had 3 children together. Stacy Marie Cowan who was a still born on May 29, 1982. Miranda (Cowan) Bratton born on September 20, 1983. Jimmy Cowan born on July 29, 1987.
David worked as a mechanist for over 36 years. He worked for Triumph Structures until he retired in 2019. After retirement David loved attending Royals games with his wife, Cheryl, daughter, Miranda, family and friends. He liked to travel with Cheryl, they traveled to many states during their marriage with their kids and without kids. He loved going to car shows, auctions with his wife, and planting in his 3 gardens. His gardens were his pride and joy that he took very good care of maintaining. He loved going hunting and bass fishing with his son, Jimmy. He went on many hunting trips with his friends for elk, deer and pheasant. Dave was an outdoorsman who loved nature, animals, and the quiet outdoors. He had a truck that he loved, a 2004 Dodge (2500) with a Hemi that he drove until he couldn’t drive no longer.
David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his children more than anything in the world and would do anything for them. He was there for his daughter, Miranda when she needed to go to her sporting events (which he attended every single game), needed a ride home after a night out, help her moving or just advice in general. He taught his son, Jimmy how to hunt, fish, and change the oil in his vehicles. His best friends were his daughter and son’s dogs. He never met a dog that he didn’t get attached to. There was never a kid that didn’t love Dave. His grandkids loved to ride on papa’s lap while mowing the yard, riding the buggy, and riding on the 4-wheeler. His only grandson, Skyler was his buddy and they did everything together even up to his last days. His grandkids were the light of his life.
The first impression most people discovered about Dave was “a man of few words”, easy going, laid back, kind, and a guy that has a heart of gold. If someone ran out of gas in their cars (Miranda, Brian, and Bev), all they had to do was call and he’d go running. Dave was always a positive guy even after tragedy struck when he lost part of his finger at work. Dave was always cracking jokes (mom wasn’t) about losing his finger. Dave somehow pulled off being ornery like it was a good thing.
David is preceded in death by his father, Charles Cowan; his mother, June Cowan; his still born daughter Stacy Marie Cowan; and his grandparents.
He is survived by his devoted, loving and caring wife, Cheryl Ann (Ayler) Cowan, of Harrisonville, MO; his daughter, Miranda (Cowan) Bratton, of Lee’s Summit, MO; his son Jimmy Cowan and wife Sam, of Garden City, Mo; his grandson Skyler Cowan and girlfriend Olivia, of Lee’s Summit, MO; granddaughter Haylee Cowan, of Harrisonville, MO; and granddaughter Olivia Bratton, of Lee’s Summit, MO; his brother Mike Cowan and wife Chris, of Wisconsin; his sister Janet (Cowan) Bray and husband Fred, of Harrisonville, MO; his sister Mary (Cowan) Bryant and husband Steve, of Bolivar, MO; and many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.
