Dorothy Lee Thomas, of Harrisonville, Missouri, was born August 30, 1921 in Harrisonville, Misouri the only child of Walter and Jessie (Kirk) Garrett. She departed this life Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Kansas City Hospice House at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 12 days.
On June 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Billy J. Thomas in Harrisonville.
In 1939, Dorothy graduated from Harrisonville High School in the top 1/7th of her class of 70. Later that summer she was employed in the law office of Allen B. Glenn, where she remained for two years. In 1941, Dorothy worked as a secretary in the law firm of Crouch, Crouch and Kimberlin until 1953, at which time she and her family moved to Phoenix. She lived in Phoenix for two years and while in Phoenix she was a secretary in the office of Ross Jones, the Attorney General of the State of Arizona, and later in the law office of the late Carl W. Divilbliss, a former resident of Peculiar, Missouri. From 1955 until 1977, Dorothy and her family resided in Los Angeles, California, during which time she was a secretary to a group of attorneys for approximately 15 years. She resigned that position when she and her husband purchased and operated a Sir George Smorgasbord restaurant. She and her family returned to Harrisonville in 1977 and at that time she was employed in the Green Clinic until her retirement in 1986. Dorothy joined the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville in 1938 and remained a faithful member until her death.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy J. Thomas; a special friend, Dwight Norman and a nephew, Larry Moore.
Dorothy is survived by an aunt, Doris Bohannon, Harrisonville; two nieces, Mica Thomas Duncan, Tucson, Arizona, Pamela Thomas Hessler, Newport Beach, Virginia; a nephew, Philip Thomas, Chesterfield, Missouri; many cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, Missouri.
In lieu of floweres the family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice House or to the American Cancer Society.
