Gordon Lee Hill, age 81, of Garden City, MO, formerly of Carroll County, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015 at his home in Garden City, Missouri.
Gordon was born June 30, 1934 to Russell Glen and Emma Lee (Jones) Hill near Norborne, MO. Gordon married Shirley Ellen McCracken on March 10, 1954 in Carrollton, MO. Gordon met his wife, Shirley, during the 1951 flood. This year they celebrated 61 wonderful years together.
Gordon graduated from Wakenda School District. Following high school, Gordon went to welding school and trained in refrigeration and electrical work. He was a "jack-of-all-trades" and was so talented he could do anything. He always loved the challenge of fixing whatever needed to be fixed. Gordon was a work-a-holic from his early years and continued until this past year when he had to slow down due to his health. He began working in his parent's grocery store in Brunswick, MO as a meat cutter and after they were married, they opened a grocery store in Wakenda, MO. They had the grocery store for about two years and then moved to Kansas City, where he worked for 13 years in maintenance at Union Station. After that, Gordon worked for Delco Battery, a division of General Motors for twenty plus years. A few years after retirement, they moved to Garden City, MO. Later, Gordon started a towing business which he enjoyed for 18 years, continuing until this past year. He also farmed on weekends in Carroll and Livingston counties. Gordon always enjoyed having a huge garden and sharing the produce with family and friends. He loved farming, mushroom hunting, anything outdoors, western movies and he was a great cook for the last ten years. Gordon was of the Baptist faith.
Gordon had a very strong bond with his grandchildren, Mark and Becky Dudley. Both have always idolized their grandpa and followed in his footsteps as he taught them about life. Mark was his shadow from the time he could walk learning to drive tractors, trucks, a bobcat, and heavy equipment preparing him for his future. Grandpa has been sowing those seeds of being a hard worker while also teaching them about a variety of different things. Gordon also loved his great-granddaughter, Peyton Marie, and went to check on her everyday before he got sick.
Gordon is survived by his wife Shirley, of the home; one daughter, Lisa Diane Dudley of Harrisonville, MO; one son, Jason Lee Hill of Hutchinson, KS; two brothers, Russell Glen Hill, Jr., of Wakenda, MO, Charles Richard Hill and wife Linda, of Liberty, MO; five grandchildren, Mark Dudley, Becky Dudley, Phillip Conner, Shay Ann Hill and Breana Hill; one great-granddaughter, Peyton Marie Conner.
