Harold M Sliffe, age 86 of Archie MO died Thursday Jan 26, 2012 at the Adrian Manor Nursing Home in Adrian MO surrounded by love and family. Harold was born Oct 27, 1925 on a farm east of Austin MO, the youngest son of Herbert Maxwell and Bessie Mae (Jennings) Sliffe. His father died when Harold was 15 months old and he was raised by his mother on the farm.
He attended Fairview Country Grade School and was a graduate of Archie High School, class of 1943.
After High School, he worked in Kansas City at Armour Meats until he joined the Navy in 1944. He served 2 years aboard the U.S.S. California during World War II.
On June 16, 1946 he was united in marriage to Jean York at the Archie Baptist Church. To this union three children were born.
In 1948, Harold and Jean bought the Phillip's 66 filling station in Archie and operated it for 17 years selling it to his nephew, Dewayne in 1965. In 1966 he became the acting postmaster of Archie MO and in 1967 he was officially appointed postmaster by President Lyndon B. Johnson. He faithfully served until his retirement in April of 1992. He was united in marriage to Fern Jones on October 23, 1999 and they enjoyed traveling, going to music shows and having get togethers with friends and family.
Harold was a member of the First Baptist Church of Archie MO, he served several years on the Archie School Board, and was a member of the Archie Lodge #633 for more than 50 years.
Harold loved his children, and really enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he loved farming and being outdoors, he loved playing cards with his friends at the filling station, he loved just visiting with friends and never met a stranger,
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jean on July 9, 1992, his brother Charles Herbert Sliffe, and his sister Mary Alice Waggener.
He is survived by his wife, Fern of the home, a son Thomas Maxwell Sliffe and wife Sandy of Overland Park KS, a daughter Karen Sue Grimes and husband Randy of Archie MO, and a son Donald Eugene Sliffe and wife Cheryl of Bolivar MO, seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 stepsons, Randy & Mike Jones, 4 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, Archie, Missouri with burial in the Crescent Hill Cemetery near Adrian.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Memorial Fund.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.
