Jack Stiles, 81, Peculiar, MO was born June 6, 1930 in Aldrich, MO the son of Cecil and Lula (Hopkins) Stiles. He departed this life on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Cass Regional Medical Center, Harrisonville, MO.
On July 13, 1948, he was united to Alma Louise Tuckness in Springfield, MO. Later he was united in marriage to Lara Leontine Hoepker on May 19, 1976 in Miami, OK.
Jack enlisted in the US Army and was a Korean War veteran where he was a POW and fought in the Battle of Pork Chop Hill. He was one of the first promoted to Sergeant-Major when the position was created in 1958. Jack was awarded the Legion of Merit and Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the highest peacetime award the Army offers. After his retirement, he managed the officer’s club at Richards-Gebaur AFB in Belton, MO. Later took the position of analyst and management officer with the Army Corps of Engineers and was in charge of rebuilding the levy’s during the Missouri River floods of 1993.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife.
Jack is survived by his wife Lara L. Stiles of the home; four sons, Terry Stiles and wife Martha, Columbia, MO, Michael Stiles and wife Jane, Shawnee, KS, Chris Stiles and wife Cathy, Overland Park, KS, Tom Stiles, Telluride, CO; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two step-children, Stephanie Green and husband Adam, Strafford, MO and Toby Mathews, Peculiar, MO; two step-grandchildren; five brothers, Robert Stiles, Peculiar, MO, James Stiles, Springfield, MO, William Stiles, Indianapolis, IN, Thomas Stiles, Conway, AR, George Stiles, Dallas, TX.
Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.
Family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors or the American Lung Association.
