James 'DD' E. Courtney, Jr.

May 1, 1951 — August 28, 2016

James Emery "DD" Courtney Jr., of Latour, Missouri was born May 1, 1951 in Tomkins Cove, New York the son of James Emery Sr. and Eleanor Virginia (Jones) Courtney. He departed this life on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the Rehabilitation Center of Raymore, Missouri at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 27 days.
In 1953, the family moved from New York to Garden City, Missouri where Jim grew up. He attended Schuyler School from 1st to 4th grade and after it closed down attended Garden City Elementary. Jim was the first 8th Grade class of Sherwood Jr. & Sr. High School in Creighton, Missouri. He entered the Army of March 1969 during his senior year of high school and got his GED. Jim had basic training in Fort Polk, Louisiana and was going to school in the Army to be a helicopter mechanic. He had medical issues and received an honorable medical discharge at Fort Rucker, Alabama. While he was in the south, he acquired a great taste for Cajun cuisine that stayed with him throughout his adult life.
Jim worked and retired as a machinist from Stahl's in Kingsville, Missouri where he resided for a number of years. After moving to Latour, he enjoyed his home, loved gardening, fishing and bow hunting. He kept a pristine yard and loved raising chickens as long as his health allowed. Jim was active with the American Legion in Garden City for over 20 years as a Vice Commander always keeping busy doing projects and cooking for their fundraisers. He was a Christian and was recently baptized by Pastor Geesy of Garden City, whom he worked with at Harvestor's helping many people for several years. He always had a laugh and anyone that really knew him knows he would give the shirt off his back and never wanted any recognition cause he felt that was very personal.
Jim loved genealogy and kept up on both sides of his family some of which went back to the early 1700's. He loved family dinners and reunions spending time with cousins and brothers and sisters usually laughing hysterically talking about fond memories. He had a genius IQ and memory like no other and could tell some good stories. He will be missed by many.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Courtney.
Jim is survived by his son, James Tillman Courtney II and his wife, Melanie, Latour, Missouri; two daughters, Stephanie and Carrie Ann; 3 grandchildren, that were the light of his life and he always took the time to enjoy them, Aliya Grace Black, Jace James Courtney and Dysen Steele Courtney; 4 sisters Judy Crossley, Denise Pulliam and Joyce Hern all of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Susan Pulliam, Butler, Missouri; 2 brothers, Doug Courtney and Matthew Courtney both of Garden City, Missouri; his father, James Emery Courtney, Sr. of Lowry City, Missouri and friend, Elda Claunch of Garden City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
