John Louis Ledgerwood died Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, at the age of 89.
John was preceded in death by his father Clement Ledgerwood, his mother Laura Belle (Eaves) Ledgerwood, brother Norman Ledgerwood, and sister Mary Tisdale, and two grandchildren, Angela Ledgerwood and Michael Ledgerwood.
John is survived by his wife Amy Dean (Storms) Ledgerwood, son George Ledgerwood (Karen), son John David Ledgerwood (Paula), and daughter Laura Hartwig (Troy). John was blessed with nine living grandchildren; Morgan Riechers (Matt), Cassie Nichols (Andrew), Faith Ledgerwood, John Caleb Ledgerwood, Paige Ledgerwood, Aaron Ledgerwood, Rebekah Hartwig, Rachel Hartwig, and Ruby Hartwig; and four great-grandchildren, Jackson Riechers, Chloe Riechers, Derek Riechers, and Leo Nichols.
John was a civil engineer, who spent all of his engineering career in federal service, with the majority at the United Stated Postal Service. John obtained his degree from University of Kansas using his veteran’s education benefit, after serving honorably in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Sargeant in the Third Infantry Division. Before that, John was a carpenter, like his father and older brother; skills which he used over his whole life.
John’s greatest love in life was his wife, Amy. They met at work and were married within eight months of dating. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 6, 2023. Completely devoted to one another, they raised a wonderful family together and taught them the true meaning of love, faith, and family.
John’s next loves after family were fishing, hunting, woodworking, singing, and his church family. John tied flies, and made his own beautiful fishing rods, and frequently visited the trout streams of southern Missouri and lakes throughout the region. Although John greatly valued education, he was willing to pull his children out of school for the opening day of trout season on March 1st. John crafted all kinds of beautiful products in his woodworking shop, but he especially loved turning items on the lathe. He made bowls, candlestick holders, pens, and spindles for lovely cradles for his grandchildren.
John was a longstanding deacon at Freeman Baptist Church, where John and Amy worshipped for 56 years. John served as the worship leader for many years, and he loved expressing himself through his warm tenor and the words of favorite hymns. John also sang daily in his family life, and songs are some of his family’s favorite memories of him.
John was an active member of the Spirit of ’76 Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). John served as a Boy Scout troop leader for his sons, who both achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
In all things, John exemplified a life of hard work, service, and enjoyment of God’s blessings in faith, family, and nature. John will be sorely missed, but we gratefully look forward to reunion in Heaven.
