Mrs. LaVerne Maxine Granny Vern Southard, of Harrisonville, Missouri, was born November 6, 1920 in Bogue, Kansas, the daughter of Alvin Ray and Bessie (Van Allen) Kellogg. She departed this life Tuesday, January 24, 2006, Crown Care Center, Harrisonville at the age of 85 years, 2 months and 18 days.
In August 1947, LaVerne was united in marriage to Guy Derward Southard Jr.
LaVerne was employed as a secretary for Forrest T. Jones Insurance Company, Kansas City, Missouri until her retirement in 1987. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, Harrisonville, the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and attended Ft. Hays State University, Ft. Hays, Kansas. LaVerne lived in Garden City before moving to Belton in 1983 and later moved to Harrisonville in 1988. She loved to travel, do crossword puzzles and being a grandma.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Southard on November 14, 1986; two brothers, Wilton and Norwood Kellogg.
She is survived by a son, Ernie R. Southard, Harrisonville, Missouri; a grandson, John Southard, Denver, Colorado; a brother, Rex Kellogg, Phillipsburg, Kansas; numerous adopted grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 27, 2006 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.
Family suggests memorial contribtutions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
