Lawrence Armstrong

October 23, 1916 — April 18, 2008

Leo Lawrence Armstrong of Harrisonville, Missouri was born October 23, 1916 in Coleman, Missouri the son of Leo and Lois Minerva (Lawrence) Armstrong. He departed this life Friday, April 18, 2008 at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 25 days.
On, February 12, 1950, Lawrence was united in marriage to Alma Dell Fredrickson in Harrisonville, Missouri.
Lawrence and his father owned and operated, Armstrong Grain Elevator in Harrisonville and were employed at Owen Lumber, Company in Harrisonville and Belton, Missouri and later was employed as a carpenter with Jay Cantrell until his retirement. When Lawrence and Alma Dell first came to Harrisonville, about 2500 people were here and where Clay Street is now he raised hogs, sheep and some horses. Lawrence enlisted in the Army in September of 1941. He traveled by train to Camp Roberts in California and finished boot camp on day before Pearl Harbor. He spent time in many places during the Army in Australia, at the Guadal Canal, Fuji Islands and in Japan. He came home on leave and while on leave, the war ended. Lawrence went back to California for his discharge from the Army for his 3 years and 9 months of service and received 3 bronze stars. After his discharge, he hitchhiked to the east coast, south to Florida and to New Orleans and then came home. Lawrence enjoyed boating on the Lake of the Ozarks, woodworking and being outdoors. He enjoyed music especially Classical and Irish songs as well as religious hymns. Lawrence became a Christian at an early age and was baptized in the First Christian Church where he was a member and served as Deacon and Elder. He loved his family, especially his grandson, Lawrence T, they spent many good times together.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Dell Armstrong of the home; a son Larry Wayne Armstrong, Tongonoxie, Kansas; a grandson, Lawrence Taylor Armstrong, Raytown, Missouri; a great-grandson, Leo Lawrence Armstrong; his daughter-in-law, Terri Rothwell and husband, Dale, Raytown, Missouri; other relatives, many friends and special neighbors for many years, Brad and Paula Beemer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial at the Oreint Cemetery.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund.
