Nonnie Dunkin of New Virginia, Iowa was born February 4, 1913 in Jones, Alabama the daughter of Charley Picton Berry and Sarah Annie (Ousley) Berry. She passed from this life April 6, 2007 at the Indianola Good Samaritan Home in Indianola, Iowa at the age of 94 years 2 months and 2 days.
Nonnie was united in marriage to Ernest Leslie Dunkin on August 12, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri. They resided on the family farm near Daugherty, Missouri where she continued to live until her move to New Virginia, Iowa in 2003.
Nonnie graduated from Garden City Missouri High School. She was a long time member of the Daugherty United Methodist Church until its close. She became a member of the Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church near Garden City until her move to New Virginia where she was a member of the New Virginia United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of both the Garden City O.E.S. #340 in Garden City, Missouri and the White Shrine of Jerusalem #26 in Harrisonville, Missouri. She was a member of the Elco Garden Club and had been a 4-H leader.
Nonnie was a self taught florist, working for area florists for over 25 years. She designed the flowers for the marriage of her son and grandchildren. She was still arranging flowers family members would bring her until this past year.
Nonnie enjoyed playing cards, working with flowers, the Senior Citizens functions and sharing time with friends and family especially her grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, two brothers, Curtis and Charles Berry and three sisters, twin sister, Monnie Berry, Lois Clement and Louise McGee.
She leaves to cherish her memory, son Jerry Dunkin and wife Sharon of New Virginia, Iowa; three grandchildren, Steven Dunkin and wife Pam of New Virginia, Iowa, Scott Dunkin of Ames, Iowa, Carolyn Heckmon and husband Phillip of Boone, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Sean, Hannah and Asher; two sisters, Dr. Elizabeth Berry of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Gladys Russell of Los Altos, California as well as other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.
