Ret. USN Petty Officer 1st Class Mark D. Grote passed away surrounded by the love of his family on February 20, 2022, after a 10-month battle with Esophageal Cancer. Mark was born on January 20, 1958, in Kansas City, MO. He graduated from De Soto High School and after that he joined the Navy. While in the Navy he met and married the love of his life, Julie (Hoehn) Grote on June 29, 1979.
Mark proudly served in the U.S. Navy until his retirement. The Navy allowed his family to travel across the US and they lived in some beautiful places. The place he talked about visiting the most was Greece and he made it clear if you ever get the chance to go there, you should. After his retirement, Mark spent most of his time in the Louisburg and Paola areas where he and Julie could spend time with their two children, Jason and Jennifer. He was proud of both of them very much. He enjoyed life. He was a funny guy and loved a good party. He loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and loved traveling to the lake with them.
Mark is survived by his wife Julie, son Jason (Crystal) Grote, Daughter Jennifer (Jason) Kush and 5 wonderful grandchildren, Jackson, Ethan, Noah, Mackenzie and Maverick, his godson, Gage, brother, Kurt and his sister Tanya. He was preceded in death by his father Jake, mother Lorna, and brother Kip. Mark was a loving husband, father and grandfather and shipmate. Devoted to his family and taken away far too young. Our hearts are broken. We know in Heaven there is rejoicing that you are healed, for that we are grateful and it comforts us who miss him already.
Please join us for food and a Natty Light toast in his honor at a Celebration of Life for Mark at the VFW, Isadore Hoehn VFW Post 7397, 9550 Pflumm Rd, Lenexa, KS 66215 on February 28th, 6-8pm.
He will be buried in a private service at the Freeman, MO Cemetery with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO 64145 or he was a Lifetime Member of the VFW, so a donation to the Isadore Hoehn VFW Post 7397, would also be appreciated.
