Karen Michelle “Shelly” Carter, 51, of Pleasant Hill, was born, December 16, 1965, in Kansas City, the daughter of Ronald I. and Sharon K. (Williams) Carter. She departed this life, Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Kansas University Medical Center.
Shelly was a 1984 Ruskin High School graduate. She earned her undergraduate degree from the North Carolina State University; later earning her Master’s degree from the Oklahoma State University. She proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1988-1992.
She was employed as a biologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers retiring in 2014. She was a member of the Daughter of the American Revolution, Sarah Lewis Boone chapter. She loved traveling, collecting arrowheads, fishing and gardening. She was an avid animal rights activist.
Shelly is survived by her parents, Ronald and Sharon Carter of Pleasant Hill; her sister, Denise Carter of Pleasant Hill; other relatives and friends. She is also survived by her dog Daisy and her cats D.J. & Dora.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Reverend Todd MacLean will officiate. Graveside military services and interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Army and the V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor Guard. Casket bearers are Scott Biggerstaff, Jerry Blencoe, Jeremy Ledgerwood, Casey Lewis, Bruce Newsom, and Rob Whitesides.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the V.F.W. Post #3118-Veterans Relief Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
