Shirley Sue Gundy

On December 8, Shirley Gundy passed away peacefully at the age of 80. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, & friend. She was born June 6, 1944 at her grand-parents farm, French & Manthis Johnson of Roanoke, MO. She was the 7th child of Roy E & Nell V (Johnson) Smith. She graduated from Keytesville High School in 1962 at the age of 18. In 1963, she moved on to Kansas City MO where she found a job working for Swedish American Saving & Loan.

She later met her future husband Walter Gundy on a city bus while going home from work in March of 1964. They were soon married on November 21, 1964 in Kansas City & just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. 

Early in their marriage, in 1966 Walter entered the Air Force. During this time they lived in Rantoul IL, Wichita KS, Las Vegas NV and Grandview MO. During their time traveling, she gave birth to their two daughters Vickie & Janet before settling in Grandview MO. 

In 1973, they purchased a 6 acre tract of land and built a beautiful 2 story home in the country in Harrisonville MO. Later in 1987 they moved to town to a new home on Halsey Terrace where they resided until 2022. During this time she helped care for her grandson Jonathan (Harper) until he was school age. She enjoyed taking him to garage sales, going to Wal-Mart (where he was treated with a cookie), washing the truck & other activities she even taught him how to smash aluminum cans.

In 2022 they moved to Fort Scott KS where their daughter Janet lives so she could help with daily activities. 

She loved staying home & taking care of the family. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, & having and going to garage sales. 

She had a very large extended family where she had fond memories of Christmas gatherings and family reunions. She was also fond of spending time on Aunt Sally & Uncle Franks farm where he raised tobacco & black diamond watermelons.

She enjoyed attending weekly church services & their activities. She enjoyed doing for others in activities such as donating food to those in need, sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ during Halloween & more. She was always an ear for those who needed someone to listen. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Roy & Nell Smith, grandparents Casper & Lillie Smith and French & Mantis Johnson, sisters Helen, Frances & Adeline, and brothers Jack & Billy Gene.

She is survived by husband of 60 years Walter Gundy, her brother Roy E Smith Jr (Lois), Daughters Vickie & Bob Hogue and Janet & Tim Harper, Grandchildren Sean (Kate), Aimee & Seth Hogue, Katie & Jonathan Harper. Great grandchildren Dakota, Mathew, Keira, Elias, Kaizleigh, Amarie, Kiaya, Kazmer, Charlotte & Kayson.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri. 

A Graveside Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, Missouri. 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christian Broadcasting Network or Mount Carmel Hospice and send in care to Dickey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 432, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.
