Vernon Dean McMurphy, 64, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Pleasant Hill, was born Saturday, October 19, 1946 in Pleasant Hill, the son of Frances V. “Pete” and Nannie P. (Smith) McMurphy. He departed this life at 8:33 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Kansas City VA Medical Center in Kansas City.
He was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran serving with the 339th Transport Company.
On February 21, 1970, Vernon was united in marriage to Christine Hale in Pleasant Hill. She survives although they were no longer married.
Vernon worked for United Parcel Service in Kansas City retiring in 1997. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118 in Pleasant Hill, the Pleasant Hill Optimist Club, Bit & Spur Club, and instrumental in bringing the Cass County Fair to Pleasant Hill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister Kathryn Marie McMurphy.
He is survived by his son James (and Kathryn) McMurphy of Centennial, Colorado; three grandchildren Katelyn, Lauren, and Jack; three sisters Patsy (and Jack) Zellmer of Greenwood, Dorothy Miller of Pleasant Hill, Sandi (and Ron) Beatty of Pleasant Hill; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the Pleasant Hill First Christian Church. Reverend D. Kent Deubner minister of the church will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post #3118 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
