Virgil Roy Barnett of Urich, Missouri was born September 24, 1915 near Urich the son of John Harrison and Hattie Lee (Giltner) Barnett. He departed this life on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Golden Living Center ? Westwood, Clinton, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 12 days. On July 24, 1941, Virgil was united in marriage to Loreta Marie Hickman in Clinton, Missouri. He later married Lela Faye (Woirhaye) Campbell on June 18, 1986.
Virgil was a farmer and stockman and his family was selected as the ?Farm Family of the Year? for Henry Country in 1955. As a young man, Virgil worked tearing out the Leaky Roof Railroad tracks through Urich and Creighton, Missouri and then began working and building Highway 35 which later became Highway 7. Virgil completed first through eighth grades at Oak Grove Rural School near Urich and had lived near Blairstown before moving to Clinton. He was community minded by serving on the Blairstown, Missouri School Board, was active in the Brushy 4-H Club and served many years on the Henry County Fair Board. A memory that he never forgot was getting to meet former President Harry S Truman while serving on the fair board. In his 70?s and 80?s he enjoyed woodworking, building many shelves, model cars and trucks in his home workshop. Virgil and Lela for many years enjoyed seeing the country traveling in their travel trailer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Loreta on November 4, 1984; his second wife, Lela on February 7, 2009; a grandson, Michael Meyer; a step-daughter, Delores Jean Chenoweth; three sisters, Nadine Spry; Beulah Sundberg and Evelyn Sloan. Virgil is survived by a son, Larry V. Barnett and wife, Kathryn, Urich, Missouri; a daughter, Joyce J. Meyer and husband, Lee, Independence, Missouri; two step-daughters, Marilyn Sloan and husband, Gary, Urich, Missouri, Joy Ford and husband, Fred, Lee?s Summit, Missouri; 4 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial Urich Missouri Cemetery.
Family suggest memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
