Mrs. Wilma Dickey of Harrisonville, Missouri was born on March 18, 1926 in Everett, Missouri the daughter of Leroy and Bessie Louise (Easterla) Atkinson. She departed this life on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at her home with her daughter and granddaughter at her side at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 11 days.
She was united in marriage to Billy Junior Dickey at her parent?s home in Archie, Missouri on March 2, 1947.
Wilma was a homemaker and stay at home Mother. Her true talent in life was being a licensed funeral director and was co-founder of Dickey Funeral Homes, Inc. in Garden City and Harrisonville, Missouri. Wilma worked along side her husband Bill, and was very active in the funeral business as a secretary and hairdresser for the past 61 years. Wilma is best remembered for greeting families and the public at the register stand where she demonstrated kindness, compassion, dignity, pride and honesty. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Garden City, Missouri. She was very active in the church and served as a Sunday School Teacher and was the Church Treasurer for many years. In addition, Wilma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, all in Garden City. At a young age, Wilma moved to Archie Missouri and was a 1944 graduate of Archie High School. She participated in various school activities and excelled on the basketball court. During 1943 and 1944, Wilma spent her summers in Glendale California where she was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Plant and later at the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Plant in Kansas City Missouri until the end of World War II. On July 4, 1947, Wilma moved from Archie, Missouri to Garden City, Missouri and later moved to Harrisonville, Missouri in 1980. Wilma enjoyed crocheting tea towels, cross stitching quilts and was especially proud that she made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. Each Christmas she made sure that each family member received several tea towels which are cherished by each family member. Wilma was an excellent cook and her family will always have memories of her butter cake, homemade noodles, rolls, wilted lettuce and potato salad, among several other wonderful dishes. Wilma will be remembered as a private person, her independence, work ethic, kindness and simple pleasures of life. In particular, it was important for her to always be present at the funeral home to provide assistance and comfort. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and made certain that the grandchildren would never leave without something to eat, whether it was a Popsicle or ice cream cone. In addition, the grandchildren always enjoyed receiving a back scratch and a kiss and hug at the door upon leaving.
Besides her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her wonderful husband and daughter: Bill J. Dickey on May 11, 2008 and Lou Ann on November 7, 1996.
Wilma is survived by her daughter, Sharon Burris, Columbia, Missouri; her two sons, Bill B. Dickey and wife Linda and Jerald A. Dickey and wife Sonja, all of Harrisonville, Missouri; twelve grandchildren, Joe, Krista Bill, Wendy, Sarah, Laura, Brok, Kevin, Dawson, Alison, Rhyse and Truman; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of friends that share our loss.
Her grandson, Bill, gave his Grandma a wonderful compliment when at a young age he said that ?Grandma was like ?Cinderella?, she cooks and cleans and takes care of all of us?. Our Mother did take care of all of us and her family. We will always be grateful to our parents for the wonderful life and memories.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, Missouri.
