Growing up on a family farm near Garden City, I attended Number Nine rural school and Sherwood High School. My college studies took me to the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, MO, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Pursuing a career in teaching, I was a teacher and football coach for 10 years, including 8 years at Sherwood High School. In 1990, I became a financial advisor with Waddell & Reed, with offices in Harrisonville and Lee’s Summit throughout my career. I had the pleasure of developing rewarding and lifelong relationships as well as achieving CREST, the highest sales award level within the company. After a 25-year career as a financial advisor, I sold my practice in 2015.
In 2014, I married Kathy Sims, a Henry County native. Kathy has enjoyed a career in nonprofit development and currently works for the Mid America Planned Giving Council, Kansas City. We have two children, Matt, his wife Talia, and grandson Benjamin, and Megan, a recent graduate of Drury University’s School of Architecture. Matt is a news reporter for KMBC Channel 9 in Kansas City.
I served as the President of the Cass Co. Historical Society for 6 years, am currently volunteering at the Great Beginnings pre-school, and am a member of the Shamrock Hills Senior Men’s Golf League. My wife and I reside in Lee’s Summit, attend the Summit United Methodist Church, and enjoy participating in activities in our community.
